MEETINGS and COVID-19:
The City of KCMO mask mandate for meetings is no longer in effect. You may still wear a mask if you like. We will also continue to Zoom the meeting to those members that don't feel comfortable at an in-person meeting or just can't attend the meeting in person. The Zoom details will be emailed to members the week before the meeting.
May 13th Regular Meeting. KC Woodturner member Matthew Nowak is going to talk about wood identification.
May 13th Challenge: Make a set of chopsticks. See how it's done by reviewing Anthony Harris' demo on YouTube.
Please remember to pick up your 2024 KCWT Membership Card at any Woodturners regular meeting or any time the clubhouse is open (see Guild schedule). The metal card file box is beside the Guild membership card file box on the walnut counter at the clubhouse entry way. When you pay your 2024 dues, your new 2024 KCWT Membership Card will be in the metal card file box. Current membership cards give members 10% off non-electrical items at Woodcraft, Metro Hardwoods, Schutte Lumber, Rockler, Penn State, and Klingspor. This 10% off is a great member benefit. Many members use this benefit to pay for their dues many times over.
FUTURE MEETING DEMOS: At some future meeting, KC Woodturner Mike Thomas is going to demonstrate how to turn a police baton. Mike was approached by a Kansas City Kansas policeman about making him a baton to replace the one he lost. It turns out that the KC Woodturners might be turning batons for all the KCKPD graduating new recruits. Also, KC Woodturner Kevin Neelley will show how to use story boards for simplifying turning these batons.
OPEN TURNING:
Open Turning has started again on Wednesday and Thursday evenings 6:00pm to 9:00pm and on Saturday mornings 8:30am-noon. All eight lathes are available for use. You can always drop by and talk about a project. Anthony Harris will be the shop Opener on Wednesday and Thursday evenings.
Electricians are still installing wiring and lighting. Watch this space for new information.
FUTURE EVENTS: Starting April 5, 2024. First Fridays at the Crossroads: There will be seven First Fridays from April until October 2024, the first Friday of every month, at the Crossroads District in KCMO. View the Crossroads website: Click Here.
The KC Woodturners as well as the KC Woodworkers Guild will sell things at this event in the new clubhouse, not on the street. Paid members can also sell things, we are just not sure how at this time. The Guild will charge a 20% fee on everything sold to pay for the First Fridays Assn. entry fee. The Guild will send instructions to all First Friday Vendors.
Shop Cleanup Called for Saturday morning, April 27, 2024, 10:00am until finished: We need a clean shop for the second First Fridays event (which is May 3rd, the next Friday). We need as many volunteers as possible to get this cleaning done a quickly as possible. No turning until the cleaning is completed.
